COSTAL DEVLOPMENT ACTIVITIES WILL FLOURISH WITH DEPLOYMENT OF FLOATNG JETTYIES.

MINISTRY OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYES ISSUES DREAFT GUIDELINES OF TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF FLOTING ATRUCTURES FOR PUBLIC CONSULTATON.

Ministry intends to promote floating jetties for various usages right along the Indian coastline.

Ministry of port shipping and waterways has compiles the draft guidelines for technical specification of floating structures, with a vision
to line up and deploy world-class floating infrastructure right along the coastline and issued the identical for public consulting.

Floating structure
due to its inherent advantages, is attractive solution and being encouraged by the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways.

The benefits of floating jetties over
the traditional quay and glued concrete structure are as follows:

• It could be a cost-effective solution and far cheaper than conventional structure price.
• Setting
of floating structure is far faster as compared to traditional jetties. Usually, floating structure are often inbuilt 6-8 months as compared to 24 months for conventional structure.
• Its environmental impact is minimal.
• Expansion are easily feasible
because of modular construction techniques.
• It
is well transportable just in case of reconfiguring of the port.
• It provides constant freeboard between jetties and boats.

Deployment of floating jetties, especially in location having
an outsized, tidal range, where conventional quay pose problems during low water periods, is incredibly convenient. Floating jetties, at such location provide constant freeboard, eases embarkation of ships stores and simple unloading of fisherman’s catch. Its consequently results in increased productivity moreover as safety of the fisherman within the long term.

Ministry of port, shipping and waterways has successfully implemented
some pilot projects within the recent past by following the international guiding principal. These include fitting of passenger floating jetties in Goa, water-aerodromes at Sabarmati River & at Sardar Sarovar dam (for the seaplane services) which are yielding of the result over 80 similar projects of the ministry are under strategy planning stage right along the coastline for overall development and upliftment of the coastal community.

A benchmark and standard specification at par with international standard are being evolved by the ministry
in order that technical specifications of floating structure like floating jetties, water-aerodromes, floating marinas, fish landing facilities etc. so precise and stringent technical specifications are established.

The draft guidelines
together with proposed specifications/schedule of technical requirements (SOTR) are issued for seeking the feedback and suggestions from the general public. The draft guidelines may be accessed on the link:

For which suggestion
will be emailed to sagar.mala@in by 11.12.2020.
It has been a priority of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s government
to boost transparency within the government. The issuing of draft guidelines and seeking public feedback may be a progressive step within the same direction, which is able to benefit and prove a milestone for the upliftment of the coastal community within the long term.
